Virtel was conceived in February 2001. The founders recognised that there was a need for a new entity in the mobile communications value chain, one focused on enabling MVNOs to enter the market.
In 2002, Virtel Intelligence signed a wholesale network access agreement with Vodafone Australia. This agreement with Vodafone allowed for the aggregation of traffic from a number of MVNOs.
In November 2002 Vodafone officially launched their Wholesale Division confirming a focus on supporting multiple brands on their Australian network.
In 2004, Virtel successfully negotiated the purchase of certain customers from Vodafone and established Reward Mobile.
Virtel has in excess of 50,000 mobile customers receiving services via numerous MVNOs and Reward Mobile.
